The Bridge of Sighs: Where Romance Meets History (and Maybe a Little Regret) Guide

The Bridge of Sighs, or Ponte dei Sospiri in Italian, is one of Venice's most iconic and romantic landmarks. This enclosed bridge, crafted from white Istrian limestone, spans the Rio di Palazzo and connects the Prigioni Nuove (New Prison) to the Doge's Palace. While its name evokes images of lovers sighing at the beauty of Venice, the reality is a bit more somber. It's a must-see for any visitor to Venice, offering a glimpse into the city's history and a perfect photo opportunity. The bridge was built in the early 17th century by Antonio Contino, whose uncle Antonio da Ponte designed the Rialto Bridge. The "sighs" it refers to are said to be those of the prisoners being led from the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace to their cells in the prison. They would catch their last glimpse of the beautiful Venetian lagoon through the bridge's small, barred windows, hence the name. Legend has it that if lovers kiss under the Bridge of Sighs at sunset while drifting in a gondola, they will be granted eternal love. Today, you can admire the Bridge of Sighs from the outside, either from the Ponte della Paglia (Straw Bridge) for the classic view or by taking a gondola ride along the canals. For a closer look and to walk through the bridge itself, you'll need to book a tour of the Doge's Palace, which includes access to the bridge and the prisons. While you won't find any specific culinary traditions directly associated with the bridge, be sure to indulge in some Venetian cicchetti (small snacks) and a glass of local wine at a nearby bacaro (wine bar) after your visit.

Transportation

The Bridge of Sighs is located near Piazza San Marco. The easiest way to reach it is by vaporetto (water bus). Take lines 1 or 2 to the San Marco/San Zaccaria stop. From there, it's a short walk to the Doge's Palace and the Ponte della Paglia, which offers the best view of the bridge.
